The Department of Social Development, also referred to as Social Development Canada, is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for developing and implementing social policies involving families with children, disabled people, senior citizens and others through a series of programmes and services. The department is also responsible for the Canada Pension Plan.
The Minister of Social Development is the Honourable Ken Dryden.
The Department of Social Development was created in December 2003 when Human Resources Development Canada was reorganized into two separate departments. As of 2005, legislative changes to legally establish a Department of Social Development and Department of Human Resources and Skills Development as well as repeal the Department of Human Resources Development have yet to be enacted.
The Department also includes the Minister of State (Families and Caregivers) Hon. Tony Ianno, Deputy Minister of Social Development Canada Hon. Nicole Jauvin and Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Eleni Bakopanos.
