Somaliland shilling - Definition and Overview

The Somaliland shilling (SlSh) is the official currency of the self declared Republic of Somaliland. It was introduced around October 1994 and is issued in notes with denominations of 500, 100, 50, 20 10, and 5 Shillings. Front side of the notes has a picture of "Bank of Somaliland" (Baanka Soomaaliland) while the reverse side depicts an image of Naasa-Habloid (landmark twin-hills located near Hargeisa) and three camels led by a man and a boy.

The central bank provides exchange services for various currencies at the official government rate, but most people prefer the better, although unofficial, rates provided by the Hawala agents and moneychangers found on the streets of main cities.
