Northern Schleswig (Nordschleswig) is the German language name on South Jutland, the geographical area covering the southernmost 30 kilometers of the Jutland Peninsula. The area was historically a part of the Duchy of Schleswig (Danish Slesvig), that was annexed by Prussia after the Second War of Schleswig (1864), but ceded to Denmark after a plebiscite in 1920. Today an ethnic German minority lives in South Jutland. The major towns are Sønderborg, Padborg, Tønder, Aabenraa and Haderslev. Municipalities
