The Southern Literary Messenger was a periodical published in Richmond, Virginia from 1834 until the end of the Civil War. Edgar Allen Poe was an early and influential editor. The periodical was published approximately monthly, and it served as a catalyst for The South to eventually unify under one common culture with Richmond as its capital.
Every issue carried the subtitle "Devoted to Every Department of Literature and the Fine Arts"
