Speakers' Corner on a Sunday in April, 2004

Speakers' Corner is an area in the north-east corner of Hyde Park, City of Westminster, London, close to Marble Arch and close to the place where the Tyburn gallows stood. It is a traditional site of public speeches and debate, especially on Sunday mornings, replacing an earlier site further into the park known as Reformer's Tree.

Although many of its regular speakers are distinctly non-mainstream, it has had such noted people as Karl Marx, Lenin, George Orwell and William Morris speak, and from time to time is used by candidates for the mainstream parties in election campaigns. A prime example of the concept of free speech, any person may turn up unannounced and talk on almost any subject they wish, although they are likely to be heckled by people holding opposing views.

Most of the speakers are there every Sunday, with their wide range and rehearshed speeches, but so are most of the regular Hecklers who, if they are any good ridicule the weaker speakers
