Spiderweb Software is a small video game developer founded in 1994, concentrating on shareware games for Microsoft Windows and the Apple Macintosh. The company is family based, and the staff consists of:
- Jeff Vogel, President
- Mariann Krizsan, General Manager (Jeff's wife)
- Linda Strout, Office Manager
- Spider, a pet tarantula
Spiderweb Software is most notable for the following roleplaying games:
- The Exile fantasy series of underground adventure
- The Avernum series, which are updates of the Exile series with several enhancements to the visual design and gameplay
- The games Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum, which include scenario creation kits and are a continuation of the previously mentioned series
- The Geneforge fantasy series (with sci-fi elements)
- Nethergate, a fantasy game based upon the Roman occupation of Britain
The company also provides distribution services for other shareware developers. However, though the text on the official website remains unchanged, there are unconfirmed indications that the company is planning to discontinue this service for new games.
In recent years Spiderweb Software has come under fire from parts of their game community, especially the designers of scenarios for Blades of Exile. The company has decreased its support for that game in favor of the newer Blades of Avernum, which some designers do not prefer to the old game. It also stopped releasing updates and bug-fixes for Blades of Exile, recommending instead that users upgrade to Blades of Avernum.
