Springwood - Definition

Springwood is a suburb located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, NSW.

In 1815 Governor Macquarie and his wife stopped by a spring for water down a deep glen. This gave way to the place that is now called Springwood, the second largest suburb in the Blue Mountains. The Spring(Springwood) referring to the many springs that naturally occurred in the area & the wood (Springwood)referring to the majestic Blue Gum forests of the area -much of which is now cleared for development.Blue Gum Forests are now referred to Blue Mountains Shalecap Forests & is a Threatened & Endangered Ecological community in the Bule Mountains. Springwood features the oldest railway station building in the Blue Mountains, Springwood was a coal and water stop in the steam era. The town now hosts a diverse range of shops, cafes, historic hotels, antique shops, galleries and amenities for both the tourist and local alike.There are excellent bushwalks in the area located very close to the town centre.

The town comes alive in April for Springwood Foundation Day and in October for Springwood Crazy Day. Springwood serves as focal point for several outer suburbs including Faulconbridge, Winmalee, Yellow Rock & Valley Heights.

Springwood is also known for being the home of well-known Art Gallery, Norman Lindsay Gallery. Artist, Norman Lindsay was depicted in the movie, Sirens, being played by actor, Sam Neill. Springwood has several churches including Springwood Baptist Church,Springwood Catholic Church, Springwood Anglican Church, Springwood Uniting Church and Springwood Presbyterian Church.

Faulconbridge, the neighbouring suburb of Springwood, was home of "the father of federation" Sir Henry Parkes and is now his burial site.
