Spuyten Duyvil, Bronx, New York - Definition and Overview |
Spuyten Duyvil is a neighborhood in the Bronx borough of New York City, named after the creek immediately to its south. While once a neighborhood in its own right, today it is widely regarded to be part of Riverdale, as it no longer has a distinct character of its own. The former boundary between Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil was 232nd Street.
The name being Dutch in origin, "Spuyten Duyvil" can be translated in one of two ways; it is said to mean either "Devil's whirlpool" or "to spite the Devil", though more likely the former.

corinneduyvis: @sjaejones It's old Dutch, so I don't know exactly, but literally? Duyvil = duivel = devil, and Spuyten has to be spuiten = spout(ing). |
