Sremska Mitrovica (Сремска Митровица) is a city located in the Vojvodina province of Serbia and Montenegro at 44.98° North, 19.61° East. In 2003 the city had a total population of 39,200. Its name means "Mitrovica of Srem" (Mitrovica of Kosovo also exists) while Mitrovica stems from name "Demetrius" or "Dimitrije" in Serbian language. Its name under the Roman Empire was Sirmium. From 1180.AD the name changed from "Civitas Sancti Demetrii", "Dmitrovica" and "Mitrovica" to its todays form "Sremska Mitrovica". It is the administrative center of the Srem District of Serbia.
