Stage Fright was the third long player by Canadian-American rockers The Band. Much more of a rock album than its predecessors, it was a departure from their previous two efforts in that its tone was darker and featured less of the harmony vocal blend that had been a centerpiece of those two albums. Furthermore, it signaled the continued decline of pianist Richard Manuel as a songwriter, who contributed only two tracks, both co-written with guitarist Robbie Robertson. (These would be the last tracks Manuel would contribute as a songwriter to the Band's oeuvre.) Indeed, Robbie Robertson continued his dominance as the group's lyricist that had begun on he previous album and would continue to be the group's dominant lyricist until the group disbanded in 1976. Also, the tradition of "switching off" instrumentation that had begun on the previous album continued here, with each musician contributing instrumental parts on at least two different instruments to the album.
Engineered by an up-and-coming Todd Rundgren, and produced by the group themselves for the first time, the album was recorded in their homebase of Woodstock, New York. For many years, it was seen as a major step down for them, though in recent years, it has ascended to the placement of the group's 1969 eponymous album and 1968's Music From Big Pink.
