In Australia a system of standard drinks is employed for a rough measure of the amount of alcohol in different drinks. One standard drink cotains 10 g of alcohol, rendering it slightly larger than the British unit of alcohol, which is 10 mL or about 8 g. A small (100 mL) glass of wine or a shot of spirits are approximately a standard drink. A 375 ml bottle of beer can vary from 0.9 standard drinks for light beer to 1.4 for normal beer.

Most alcoholic beverages sold within Australia are required to list the total number of standard drinks contained within the bottle as well as the alcoholic volume.
