Star of the Guardians is a series of 4 science-fiction / space opera novels written by Margaret Weis.
The story takes place just after the fall of a universe-wide noble monarchy, replaced by an corrupted republic.
A teenager discovers he is the nephew of the assassinated king and thus hunted by those who want to destroy the remains of the old monarchy.
Meanwhile his quest for identity and his fight against evil forces, he will discover truths about his past and the real history of the recent Revolution.
In Star of the Guardians, Margaret Weis uses many sci-fi classicals as well as various myths from Ancient Greece, Roman Republic and Judeo-Christian tradition.
Some readers may regard the series as an anti-Star Wars since some part of the universe description and of the story sounds like that of Star Wars (space knights fighting with swords, strange secret religion, few men with special powers), with inversions (in Star Wars the noble republic was replaced by an evil empire).

- Dion Starfire: Nephew of king Amodius Starfire, killed during the Revolution, and thus heir to the throne.
- Lady Maigrey Morianna: Guardian. Former member of the Gold Squadron. Former lover of Derek Sagan with whom she is bound through a mindlink. Wearing the last unaltered Starjewel.
- Lord Derek Sagan: Former guardian and leader of the Gold Squadron. Now Citizen General of the Republic. Took an active part in the Revolution and killed most former members of the Gold Squadron. Former lover of Maigrey Morianna with whom he is bound through a mindlink.
- Tusk: Mendaharin Tusca. Closest friend of Dion Starfire.
- General John Dixter: Leader of a renegades group. He is loyal to the former empire and falled in love with Lady Maigrey when he first met her on planet Laskar.
- Abdiel: Master of the Order of Dark Lightning. Lead secretly the Revolution, manipulating president Peter Robes and even Derek Sagan. Still dangerous.
- Flaim Starfire: Hidden son of king Amodius Starfire. Appears only in Ghost Legion.
- Platus Morianna: Guardian. Former member of the Gold Squadron. Teacher and spiritual father of Dion Starfire. Brother of Maigrey Morianna.
- Dana Tusca: Guardian. Former member of the Gold Squadron. Father of Tusk. Killed during the Revolution.
