Steel Angel Kurumi (鋼鉄天使くるみ; Kôtetsu Tenshi Kurumi) is a manga series and an anime series; it has been translated and released in the U.S. by ADV. The English dub features the voice acting of Claudia Black, an actor known for her role in the Farscape science fiction series. A sequel television series, Steel Angel Kurumi 2, also exists.
The animation style features quick shifts between typical anime style, dramatic still shots, and chibi anime. Each episode begins with an admonishment, unique from those of other episodes, from a character or characters, telling views not to sit to close to the television and to watch in a well-lit room. The anime is set in an alternative history version of Japan during the early 1900s prior to World War II.
The story follows a young boy (probably around 14-15) named Nakahito, a descendant of mystics, a group of people who had mystical powers. He is pushed by a group of class mates to go into a house supposidly of a mad scientist, inside he sees what seems to be a life like doll. It falls over and he accidently kisses it, causing it to turn on and turn out to be the steel angel Kurumi. The steel angel is hunted by the military for (at the time) unspecified reasons. As the series goes on the plot grows more complex, and more steel angels are added to the cast of characters, including Saki the lesbian steel angel, and Karinka.
Characters in Steel Angel Kurumi (Incomplete)
- Nakahito: a young teen age boy who has the powers of mystic and awakens Kurumi
- Kurumi: A pink hair steel angel built by Doctor Ayanakouji. She has a mark two angel heart giving her powers beyond Steel Angels who normally only have a mark one heart. She is awakened by Nakahito who by the accident of awakening her becomes her master and love.
- Saki: Another Steel Angel built by Dr. Ayanakouji, she originally was programed to destroy Kurumi, but becomes Kurumi kid sister and gets a crush on Kurumi.
- Karinka the third Steel Angel built on the design by Dr Ayanakouji, she was activated by the Academy to destroy Kurumi. She later joins Nakahito and the group orignally to figure out Kurumis power but she eventually develops a crush on Nakahito.
- Nakahitos older brother, a well trained mystic, he runs the shrine that Nakahito lives in and was ordinally sought to be the mystic to awaken Kurumi.
- Dr. Ayanakouji: Is the scientist that has built the three Steel Angels. He came to the area where Nakahito lives to find a mystic to turn on Kurumi. He has connections with the mysterious Academy.
- Dr Akagi: She is a scientist in her late thirties who works with Doctor in a military development project. She is ordinally a protagonist of Nakahito and Kurumi but quickly joins their side. She is in love with Dr
- The General: The head of the Japanese Army. He is in charge of the research projects for military and he has a crush on Karinka.
