Steel Magnolias - Definition and Overview |
|
|
Steel Magnolias is a 1989 movie. It was a comedy-drama about a group of southern women in northwest Louisiana.
The movie begins just before Shelby's Julia Roberts wedding to Jackson Dylan McDermott. It covers events over the next several years, such as Shelby's decision to have a son despite being diabetic, and the consequences that result from that decision.
Starring Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, Darryl Hannah, Sally Field, and Julia Roberts, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (Julia Roberts).
The movie screenplay was based on a stage play by Robert Harling.
One of the film's influences in popular culture was the use of a red velvet cake made in the shape
of an armadillo as the grooom's cake served at the wedding reception.
