Steinkjer is a municipality and town in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway, located at the top of the Trondheimsfjord, in the Beitstadfjord fjord inlet. Steinkjer is connected to the ocean through the narrow straight of Skarnsundet. One of the largest suspension bridges, Skarnsundsbrua, crosses it.

Steinkjer is Nord-Trøndelag’s county center and houses its regional authorities and institutions.

The municipality's scenery is rich, beautiful and varied, stretching from the fjord to the mountains. The tallest buildings in Steinkjer are two 50 metre tall grain silos, which are visible far from Steinkjer. Kirknesvaag Sag & Høvleri is a large wood mill and industry park.
