Stemless Gentian - Definition and Overview |

The Stemless Gentian (Gentiana acaulis) is a small, evergreen European perennial growing on acid soils.
It grows especially in mountainous regions, such as the Alps, Cevennes and the Jura, on heights of 800 to 3,000 m.
The trumpet-shaped terminal flowers have a blue colour with olive-green spotted longitudinal throats. They grow on a very short peduncle. These have a length of 3 to 6 cm.
The stem is often without leaves, or has 1 or 2 pairs of leaves. The leaves are gathered in a basal rosette, forming clumps.
It likes full sun, is fully hardy and flowers in spring and autumn. Its height is 2 cm and spread is 10 cm or more.
There is a related flower in this group, the Gentiana clusii, growing on limy soils. It has shorter leaves and the flowers have no olive-green stripes.
