Stephanie Cook was born in Irvine, Scotland on 3rd January 1972. She was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge and Lincoln College, Oxford. She won a gold medal in the Sydney 2000 Olympics in the women's modern pentathlon, the first time the event was included in the games. Her particular strength is in running.

She was awarded an OBE in the 2001 New Year Honours.
