Stormy Weather - Definition and Overview

"Stormy Weather" is a 1933 song written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem. It became a hit record and inspired the following movie.

Stormy Weather is a 1943 musical film which tells in flashback the story of a famous dancer who meets a young singer, both on the rise, whose lives intersect only briefly over the years. It stars Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Cab Calloway, Katherine Dunham, Fats Waller, Fayard Nicholas, Harold Nicholas, Ada Brown and Dooley Wilson.

The movie was adapted by Frederick J. Jackson, Ted Koehler and H.S. Kraft from the story by Jerry Horwin and Seymour B. Robinson. It was directed by Andrew L. Stone. In 2001 the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Stormy Weather is also a 1995 novel by Carl Hiaasen.
