Story County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 79,981. Its county seat is Nevada, Iowa6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,486 km² (574 mi²). 1,484 km² (573 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 79,981 people, 29,383 households, and 17,042 families residing in the county. The population density is 54/km² (140/mi²). There are 30,630 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.14% White, 1.83% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 5.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 29,383 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.00% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.94.
