Street name - Definition and Overview

A street name is a colloquial name given to a drug other than its popular or chemical names. Street names for drugs change from place to place and time to time, and no absolute reliance should ever be placed on them.

Amphetamine

• Billy - generally Amphetamine Sulphate
• Dexies - from the brand name Dexedrine or the chemical name Dexamphetamine sulphate,
• Speed - generally Amphetamine Sulphate
• Whiz - generally Amphetamine Sulphate

Anabolic steroids

• Iron Brew - steroids such as Durabolin, Stanozolol, Dianabol; this should not be confused with the soft drink Irn Bru.

Amyl nitrite

• Animal - play on 'Amyl'
• Liquid gold - descriptive
• Poppers - may be any of Amyl nitrite, Alkyl nitrites, or Butyl nitrite

Benzodiazepines

• Bennies - generic street name for Benzodiazepines
• Downers - generic street name for Benzodiazepines

• Forget-me-pill - chemical name Flunitrazepam
• Jellies - chemical name Temazepam

• Freebase - technically the description of an action of taking crack cocaine, but also used as a name for the drug
• Rocks - descriptive

LSD

• Acid
• Acid tabs
• Tabs - LSD is sometimes blotted onto sheets of paper, cut up into little squares called tabs
• Trips - note than an LSD experience is known as a trip; being on LSD is known as tripping
• Trade names - e.g. Strawberries; tabs are often illustrated, and specific batches named after the illustration or colour of paper used.

MDMA

• Ecstacy - perhaps not considered a "street name", because it is also the common name.
• Dennis the Menace - capsules with red and black stripes, from the children's comic character Dennis the Menace who wore a red and black striped top
• Doves - some tablets are white and stamped with a dove shape
• E - shortened version of Ecstasy
• Love hearts
• M25s - named after a story that early MDMA tablets were produced in a utility vehicle driving round the M25 motorway
• Mitzies - shortened version of Mitsubishi: the company logo is stamped on the tablets
• Molly - pure version of MDMA
• Pills - common street name in the UK, because MDMA is most commonly found in pill form
• Roobarb and custard - characters from the children's TV series Roobarb
• Other brand names such as Speckled Doves, New Yorkers, Mercedes, etc.

Heroin

• Dragon - when smoked, the thick smoke of heroin is said to resemble the tail of a dragon (hence 'chasing the dragon')
• Golden brown - from the colour of heroin
• H - shortened form of heroin
• Horse
• Smack - from the action of smacking the arm to produce a vein in which to inject the drug

Methamphetamine

• Crystal - from the crystalline form of pure methamphetamine
• Crystal meth
• Ice - from the appearance of crystalline methamphetamine, resembling ice.

• Crank - non-crystalline methamphetamine powder prepared for insufflation or injection
