Stresa front - Definition

Stresa Front was an agreement made between British, French and Italian leaders in 1935 to reaffirm the Treaty of Locarno, and to declare that the independence of Austria "would continue to inspire their common policy". They also agreed to resist any future attempt by the Germans to change the Treaty of Versailles.

The Stresa Front was triggered by the Germans declaration of their building up of an air force and their increase of their army.

However, the front was not successful. Britain, in 1935, signed the Anglo-German Naval Agreement (with Germany) and according to this Germany was allowed to build the equivalent of up to 35% of Britain's ships. Furthermore, Germany was allowed to have submarines. Britain had not discussed this with its Stresa partners and so it obviously seriously damaged the Stresa Front. It collapsed completely with Italy's invasion of Abyssinia.

It was negotiated in Stresa, Italy.
