Students for Sensible Drug Policy - Definition and Overview

Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is a national, college-based organization calling for serious reforms to drug policies. The organization is centered in Washington, D.C.

According to its mission statements, Students for Sensible Drug Policy is committed to providing education on harms caused by the War on Drugs, working to involve youth in the political process, and promoting an open, honest, and rational discussion of alternative solutions to our nation's drug problems.

SSDP was founded around the issue of the drug provision in the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Act, which denies federal financial aid to students with drug convictions. Since then, the organization has expanded its scope to include other controversial elements of drug policy like drug testing and student privacy rights, and harm-reduction, drug education and rehabilitation.

The notable success of the organization works because of direct youth involvement in the political process, and promoting an open, honest, and rational discussion of alternative solutions to America's drug problems. As of September 2004, there are over 100 chapters in the United States.

The current Executive Director of the organization is Scarlett Swerdlow, formerly of Berkeley SSDP.
