Stuyvesant Street - Definition and Overview

Stuyvesant Street is one of the oldest streets in New York City. It originally ran East from the Bowery to Peter Stuyvesant's 'bouwerie', or farm. Today it is the only true East-West Street in Manhattan, and runs from 3rd Avenue to 9th Street.

Into the 20th century, St. Mark's ran to Second Avenue, fronting St. Mark's church, for which St. Mark's Place is named. But that portion of the street has ben converted to a pocket park. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries it remained an important thoroughfare and market street, but today it is a quaint street with single family apartment buildings and is often used for movie shoots of 'Old New York'.
