Sulzer is a Swiss engineering firm which produces large motors.
Sulzer was an early sponsor of Rudolf Diesel. Diesel worked for Sulzer in 1879, and in 1893 Sulzer bought certain rights to Diesel engines. Sulzer built their first diesel engine in 1898.
In 1997, New Sulzer Diesel and Wärtsilä Diesel merged to form Wärtsilä NSD. Many of their engines are referred to as Wärtsilä-Sulzer.
Today (2004), Sulzer designs and oversees construction of the largest diesel engines, with peak capacities exceeding 80MW (Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96C-14).
