Sumba is an Indonesian island. Located to the northwest is Sumbawa. To the northeast is Flores. To the east is Timor. To the south and southeast is Australia. It is in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Before colonized Sunda was divided into several small Majapahit kingdoms, 1522 the first Europeans arrived and 1866 it belonged to the Dutch East Indies. It is principally inhabited by the Wewewa. The Sumbanese are a mixture of Malay (Austroean) and Melanesian stock of people. 65-70% of the Sumbanese practise the animist Marapu religion, with the remainder practising a mixture of Marapu with a thin veneer of Christainity. A small number of Muslims can be found along the coastal areas.
