Sumner County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 130,449. Its county seat is Gallatin6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,407 km² (543 mi²). 1,371 km² (529 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 130,449 people, 48,941 households, and 37,048 families residing in the county. The population density is 95/km² (246/mi²). There are 51,657 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (98/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.49% White, 5.78% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 48,941 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.30% are non-families. 20.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,030, and the median income for a family is $52,125. Males have a median income of $36,875 versus $25,720 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,164. 8.10% of the population and 6.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.50% of those under the age of 18 and 10.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
