Sumter County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 33,200. The county's county seat is Americus, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,276 km² (493 mi²). 1,257 km² (485 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,200 people, 12,025 households, and 8,501 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (68/mi²). There are 13,700 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.22% White, 49.02% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,025 households out of which 34.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.50% are married couples living together, 22.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
