Super Saiyan - Definition and Overview |

A Super Saiyan is a fictional special advanced and powerful state of the Saiyan race in the manga Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and the anime Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. This can be performed at at least four levels, each more powerful than the previous.
The ability to become a Super Saiyan was once considered to be a myth, because it had not been performed for over a thousand years until Son Goku accomplished it when he was fighting Freeza on Planet Namek. Their appearance is different in each form, more so in the fourth.
- Level 1: Their hair stands on end, and glows a bright yellow colour. Their eyes turn green.
- Level 2: Their hair becomes more pointed and this is the first form that has electricity in their aura, their hair continues to glow. Their eyes turn green.
- Level 3: Their hair grows until it reaches almost to their knees at the back, their eyebrows disappear and their eyes stay green.
- Level 4: Their hair is black again, their tail is returned and their bodies are covered in red fur. They also get some red around the eyes. (Note that this form is non-canonical to the original manga and anime by Akira Toriyama as it only appears in the anime Dragon Ball GT and that this is the only form that wasn't actually created by Akira Toriyama, but a company that desired to continue the Dragonball series.)
- Level 5: The hair is all gray and you sport a tribal uniform.)
Partial Saiyans (interbred with humans) also have the ability to become Super Saiyans, but are thought to be unable to attain level 4 because they often do not show the saiyan trait of a tail, which is essential for the transformation to Super Saiyan 4 to occur.

Super Saiyan 1
- Broly (non-canon)
- Son Gohan
- Son Goku
- Son Goten
- Future Trunks only reaches Super Saiyan 1, but attained a higher overall strength by powering up significantly. This is known as "Ultra Super Saiyan", but is not actually listed as a real level, because it is just a beefed up Super Saiyan 1. This is the state Vegeta was in when he called himself Super Vegeta in the fight against Imperfect Cell.
