The Surgeon-General is the senior medical officer of the British Armed Forces. The post is held by the senior of the three individual service medical directors and carries the rank of surgeon vice-admiral, lieutenant-general or air marshal. The British equivalent of the Surgeon General of the United States is known as the Government Chief Medical Officer.
