Sydney Conservatorium of Music - Definition and Overview

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music (formerly the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music) is a faculty of the University of Sydney in Australia. The principal objective of the conservatorium is to prepare gifted students for a professional career in music.

The NSW State Conservatorium of Music was established in 1916, in Sydney. It opened to students on 6 March 1916, with Henri Verbrugghen as its first Director. A specialist high school opened in 1919.

A Newcastle branch was established in 1952. The NSW State Conservatorium of Music was dissolved by the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1990. Control of the Sydney branch was transferred to the University of Sydney, and continues to this day as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; control of the Newscastle branch was transferred to the University of Newcastle, and continues to this day as the Conservatorium School of Music and Drama of the Faculty of Education and Arts of the University of Newcastle.

Past directors include Dr Edgar Bainton, Sir Eugene Goossens, Sir Bernard Heinze, Joseph Post, Rex Hobcroft, John Painter, and John Hopkins. As of 2004, Professor Kim Walker is the current Dean. The model of music education across secondary, tertiary, and community sectors continues to this day.
