Sydney Football Stadium - Definition |
|
|
The Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) was built in 1988 to be the premium football stadium in Sydney.
Until then top football events were usually held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), which being an Oval field was not ideal for the sport.
The SFS was built adjacent to the SCG, on the grounds of the old Sydney Sportsground, and is owned by the SCG Trust.
In 2002 SFS was renamed Aussie Stadium - in a 5 Year + 5 Year naming rights deal with a company - Aussie Home Loans.
The SFS was fairly busy right from the outset with virtually every major football event played in Sydney using it and two New South Wales Rugby League teams, Eastern Suburbs and Souths using it as a home ground.
This heavy use continued right up until Telstra Stadium was built for the 2000 Olympic Games. This massive new stadium took a lot of the major events away from the SFS, leaving it as a second-tier venue.
From 2005 Sydney FC will call the SFS home.
