In medicine, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is an inflammation of the whole body (the "system"). It is characterized by fast heart rate (tachycardia), low blood pressure, low or high body temperature, high respiratory rate, and low or high white blood cell count. It can be caused by severe trauma, burns, or pancreatitis. It is called sepsis if the cause is an identifiable infection.
