Szombathely - Definition and Overview

Szombathely (Latin Savaria/Sabaria, German Steinamanger) is a city in Hungary, population 79,753 (2001). It is the administrative center of the Vas county in the west of the country, located near the border with Austria.

The name Sabaria is first mentioned in 791 by chroniclers of Charlemagne's wars with the Avars. The town got Free Town privileges in 1407. A large fire destroyed the city on May 3rd, 1716.

The city became a railway junction in the 20th century. The RAF bombarded it on March 4th 1945 near the end of the Second World War.

Twin towns include Kaufbeuren in Bavaria, Lappeenranta in Finland, Maribor in Slovenia, Ferrara in Italy.
