TMF - Definition and Overview

TMF (The Music Factory) is a pop music channel that operates in three countries: the Netherlands, Belgium & the United Kingdom. It is owned by MTV Networks, in which it part of Viacom. As well showing pop videos, it also shows some of MTV's programmes like Cribs and Newlyweds.

TMF Nederland

TMF Nederland started in 1995 as the Netherlands' only local pop station by Lex Harding and the Arcade company. Although Dutch people could get MTV Europe, many felt that the Netherlands should have its own music television channel. Later the station got better viewer figures that MTV and in 2002, MTV bought the shares in TMF. In 1996, TMF started the TMF Awards in the Netherlands. Its headquarters are based in Bussum.

TMF België

TMF België is the first international extension of the TMF brand, when in 1998 TMF België started. It broadcasts entirely in the Dutch language, so it is only watch in the Flanders region. It headquarters are in Mechelen.

TMF United Kingdom

TMF United Kingdom started in 2002 as a counter against Emap's The Hits request music channel on Freeview. It broadcasts on channel 21. It also broadcasts on Sky and cable in the UK. The channel, alongside its music, recently begun to show MTV shows such as Cribs, Newlyweds and Daria as well as VH1 programming. The website may be viewed at www.mtv.co.uk/tmf.
