Tapachula is a city in the Chiapas state of Mexico. It is located in the south east of the state near the border with Guatemala, at 14.91°N, 92.27°W. In 2003 the estimated population was 191,600 people.
A severe security problem in Tapachula are the so-called "Mara Salvatruchas", gangs from Central America (mainly Honduras), who commit serious crimes including frequent murder. The AIDS rate is very high, many illegal migrants (in most cases passing by on their way to the United States) habit the town and drug trafficking is not really controlable. Several comparisons have been made between Tijuana and Tapachula, calling it the Tijuana of the South.
Important newspapers are the Tapachultecan "El Orbe" and the Soconuscan "El Diario del Sur"; radio can be received from both Mexico and Guatemala.
