TarProxy is an interesting spam reduction technique proposed by Marty Lamb. TarProxy attempts to recognize spammers when they connect to Mail transfer agents to send email. It then does everything it can to keep them connected for as long as possible, while not actually delivering their spam. The idea is to spend the resources of the spammers so that they will have less ability to send more spams.
One downside of this technique is that much spam today is sent through zombie computers so this would further steal resources from the sender who has been hijacked. It also uses resources of the mail transport agent, which may be overloaded with spam in the first place.
While it's an interesting idea, it may punish further those who are already victims of spam without severely damaging the spammers themselves.
At the moment, (December 2004) development is on hold.
