Tarxien is a smallish village in the south-easternly part of the island. The village is mostly noted for its historic temples, which date to around 5200BC and are the cornerstones of civilisation as we know it. These temple builders preceded even the phoenicians.
Tarxien presently is inhabited by around 5000 villagers. The locals have a calm laid-back attitude, but with a strong sense of bonding among them. The highlight of the year is the feast of the Annunciation, which usually comes around in the last week of May. It is the first 'festa' of the summer season in Malta, and is usually celebrated in style and with large lavish displays of fireworks.
Summer is an extremely quiet season for the Tarxien people, since the extreme heat drives the inhabitants to the seaside villages in droves...the population sometimes falls down to only two thirds of its normal size.
