Tayshaun Prince - Definition and Overview

Tayshaun Prince (born February 28 1980 in Compton, California) is a basketball player for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association. Prince is a 6'9", 215-pound small forward. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Prince was drafted in the first round (23rd overall) by the Detroit Pistons in 2002.

Prince is a very balanced player. He is a reasonably good outside shooter, and yet is devastatingly athletic when going to the rim. His unusually long arms aid him in scoring at close range, and also make him an excellent defender. He is adept at ball handling, and is a deft passer for a man of his height. His only major concern is his slender build, as larger players are able to outmuscle Prince under the basket.

Prince was selected to play for the Sophomores in the NBA All-Rookie game in February 2004. Later that year, he won his first NBA Championship when Detroit defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 4 games to 1 in the NBA Finals.

In game 2 of the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals, Prince made once of the most spectacular defensive plays in NBA history. Deep in the 4th quarter, Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers stole the ball and headed down the right sideline to attempt the game tying basket. Prince pursued from the left sideline. Miller, thinking that Prince could not catch him, attempted a layup. At the last possible moment, Prince leaped in from the other side of the basket and flipped the ball away. Detroit went on to win the game and the championship.
