Temple is a city located in Bell County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 54,514.

Temple is located at 31°5'37" North, 97°21'44" West (31.093678, -97.362202)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 169.5 km² (65.4 mi²). 169.3 km² (65.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 54,514 people, 21,543 households, and 14,110 families residing in the city. The population density is 322.1/km² (834.2/mi²). There are 23,511 housing units at an average density of 138.9/km² (359.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 69.76% White, 16.49% African American, 0.51% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 9.23% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. 17.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,543 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,135, and the median income for a family is $42,795. Males have a median income of $30,858 versus $22,113 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,360. 13.9% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Transportation
Temple was originally founded as a railroad junction, and serves as a major freight railroad hub to this day. Both the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroads operate rail yards in the city.
Truth about Temple
For young residents, Temple can be one of the more boring towns around. The city does not support as many activities that actively draw area teens and some of the most thrilling spots are Wal-Mart, the mall, the movie theaters and Friday night football games. The city is really improving culturally, however, and with the internet and cable TV, has managed to stay farily connected. Temple has a good symphony, community theatre and hosts a grammy-award winning musical group.
The Temple school system is fairly diverse in its interests and representation. Several private schools can also be found, some with more success than others. The major private schools are St. Mary's Catholic School (elementary and middle) and Holy Trinity Catholic High School and Central Texas Christian School. The catholic schools are more focused on academics and intellectual pursuits and CTCS is focused on academics.
