"The Adventure of Black Peter" is a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle. This tale is in the collection, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, but was published originally in 1904 in the Strand Magazine and Colliers.
Synopsis
No one seems unhappy that Peter Carey, a retired whaling captain nicknamed "Black Peter", is found impaled on his own harpoon inside his shed. Captain Carey was a brutal, vile man and a nasty drunk. Scotland Yard Inspector Stanley Hopkins has not been able to make any progress in the case, so he calls on his mentor, Sherlock Holmes. Shortly after the arrival on the scene of the crime, Holmes, Hopkins, and Dr. Watson encounter a young man breaking into the sea captain's shed.
The young man is arrested after he admits he wanted to see Black Peter about the theft of securities from his father, but Holmes believes the man is innocent.
