The Adventure of the Abbey Grange, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

Synopsis

Early one cold winter morning, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson receive a message from Inspector Stanley Hopkins, asking them to come to the Abbey Grange, near Chislehurst, Kent. The house's owner, Sir Eustace Brackenstall, Baronet, has been murdered. Arriving at the house, Holmes learns that they have had a wasted journey.

The dead man's wife has now told Hopkins how she saw three burglars kill her husband after he disturbed them. Holmes starts to return to Baker Street, but suddenly has second thoughts. The dregs at the bottom of a wine-glass, a mark on the seat of a chair, and a cut bellrope all suggest that this was no ordinary burglary. But should the killer be brought to trial after all, and would a jury even find him guilty?

Trivia

Some editions of the canon spell Captain Croker's name as Captain Crocker.
