The Adventure of the Dancing Men, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes is given the above code to crack, which he eventually does by frequency analysis. He rushes down to his client's house...only to find three shots had been fired: one missing entirely, one killing his client, and one wounding his client's wife. He cracks the case eventually, as well as the code.
