The original Band of Mercy was a militant youth group of the RSPCA in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century. In the 1960s the name was adopted by a group of animal rights activists who started a campaign of illegal direct action in support of animal rights. The name 'The Band of Mercy' was eventually dropped and the organization was renamed the Animal Liberation Front.
