The Boredoms are a Japanese avant-garde band formed in 1986, whose wildly varied output is notoriously difficult to pidgeonhole. They have had a fair amount of success in Japan, but only fleeting popularity in the United States where their style of music is less popular. However, members of Sonic Youth and Nirvana were fans of the band, and they played on the Lollapolooza tour in 1995.
Boredoms have a vast and sometimes confusing discography. Many band members have rotated through the group over the years, often using a number of various stage names. Yamataka Eye is the closest they have to a front man, whose output includes screams, babbling, and very heavy post-production.
Having gained much notice in the west after opening for Nirvana for eight consecutive shows in late October and early November of 1993. Two members, Yamatsuka Eye and Yamamoto Seichii, formed a collaboration with Yamazaki Maso of Masonna calling themselves "Triple Yama's."
Current activities
The Boredoms have been relatively quiet since the release of Vision Creation Newsun, with members pursuing other projects. Eye oversaw a series of remixes of the Boredoms catologue by guest DJ's, contributing one album himself. In late 2004 the Boredoms released their first album as a group in 4 years, Seadrum/House of Sun, which consists of just two extended tracks, both clocking at around 20 minutes. Along with changing the groups name to Vooredoms (double o written as an infinity symbol), the group's format has changed considerably stripping down to a four person ensemble, with Eye and Yoshimi using keyboards, electronics and singing over two drummers.
It is also to be noted that Yamatsuka Eye has changed his name three times, from Yamatsuka Eye, to Yamantaka Eye, to Yamataka Eye. He also founded the noise band Hanatarash in the 1980s.
