Psychotherapist Catherine Deane (Lopez) is an expert in a new treatment for mental patients, in which she literally enters into their dreams. She is pressured into trying out her technique on serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher (D'Onofrio) in order to try to find one of his missing victims before she dies.
The dream sequences are a cacophony of psychedelic imagery.
