The Client (1993) is a fictional legal thriller written by American author John Grisham, set in Memphis, Tennessee. It reflects the negative influence of TV and media over young children, mixed with various legal elements and suspense. The protagonist, Mark Sway, an eleven-year-old, watches a lawyer kill himself and has valuable information wanted by the FBI. Knowing that if he talks, he'll be chased and probably killed by the mafia, he hires an attorney, Reggie Love. Along with his lawyer, he runs away to New Orleans, agrees to the Witness Protection Program and flees to a foreign land.
The 1994 film based on the novel was directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro.
