The Disneyland Memorial Orgy - Definition

The Disneyland Memorial Orgy is a black and white drawing done by Wally Wood for a humoristic underground publication called The Realist. It was published shortly after Walt Disney's death in 1967. It was commissioned to portray the "memorial" behaviour of the cartoon characters featured in many of the animated films produced by Disney in his life time.

The publication and the author of the drawing were not sued by Disney enterprises, but a company which made and distributed a black light poster of the drawing was driven out of business. The drawing is often used to illustrate certain parts of intellectual property laws in the United States, namely those that permit original works to be partially copied, for satirical or critical goals, but outlaw reproductions made for commercial purposes.

Description

Only about a third of the sixty four Disney characters depicted are actively involved in sexual intercourse or are on the point of undertaking it. Most of them are just observing the others. A few of the characters are occupied with other activities. A dazed looking Mickey Mouse, to the left in the bottom area, is plunging a syringe in his arm, while the paraphernalia of drug addicts lies at his feet. Next to him an evil looking and grinning Pluto is voiding his bladder on a very large center stage painting of the standard eager face of Mickey. Not too far from them one of the small rabbits from Bambi is probably engaged in the sin of gluttony, featured licking an ice cream cone. In the upper left area Dumbo the flying elephant has just emptied his intestines on Donald Duck, while flying along.

The chaos of the scene and the panoramic view resembles the blackest satires of William Hogarth or medieval depictions of Hell by masters such as Hieronymus Bosch. However, none of the characters are suffering, save for Snow White who does not appear to appreciate what five of the seven dwarfs are trying to do to her. Donald Duck is of course quite angry at Dumbo. The left part of the painting is decorated with a few allusions to the lucrative nature of Walt Disney enterprises.
