The first novel in Tad Williams's epic fantasy trilogy Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, The Dragonbone Chair details how Prince Elias comes to the throne of Osten Ard and forges an agreement with the Storm King, Ineluki the Sithi. Elias then makes war on his younger brother, Josua, who he believes is plotting against him. As Osten Ard is torn apart, Simon Mooncalf is briefly apprenticed to a wizard named Morgenes. Morgenes is killed, and Simon becomes a member of the League of the Scroll (dedicated to opposing the Storm King) in his place. With Binabik the troll and Miriamele, the daughter of Elias, Simon comes to Josua and searches for three swords that might give them victory even against Elias's and Ineluki's combined forces. One - Sorrow - is in the possession of the enemy, but Memory and Thorn are not. The quest to acquire those two lost swords takes center stage in the rest of the series.
