The Elder Gods (published in 2003) is the first book in The Dreamers by David Eddings.
The plot revolves around the invasion of the unsuspecting West by the hordes of the Vlagh, an evil insect inhabiting the desert centre of the continent.
Many of the same cliches and character types which are evident in Eddings' earlier series, particularly the Elenium and Tamuli, appear in abundance here.
