The General in His Labyrinth (original Spanish title: El general en su laberinto) is a novel written by Gabriel García Márquez and was published in 1989. It is fictionalized telling of the last seven months in the life of Simón Bolívar, the Great Liberator of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador from Spanish rule. In this time (1830), Bolívar and his mistress Manuela Sáenz travel from the high Andes to the Caribbean coastline of Colombia. The book is mostly given over to long recollections of Bolívar's personal history, and his fall from glory over the course of a few years coupled with his physical debilitation.
